Yarn bombing

Driving to and from the Little Miss’s Auskick session each week we noticed a yarnbombing display (?) in one of the parks nearby. We had seen it for several weeks when I decided to take my camera to get some photos of it (in the back of my mind at the time I was thinking about starting this blog), but it was gone.

Fast forward a few weeks and we noticed some new work. I hotfooted it down there with the Little Miss and the Hurricane Nephew to take some pictures. We all loved the splashes of colors and the Little Miss loved the bright disks on the rainbow decorated tree. I would love to credit whoever made it but so far my investigations have been unable to uncover whether it’s an individual or groups work. Whoever created them has taken the time to sew some letters on it.

The disks look like they have been had sewn on as they don’t look like they were part of the yarn.

I had spent some time asking people I knew about the display, but couldn’t find out much at all about it. What I found interesting was people reactions to yarn bombing. There seems to be a definite like it or hate it divide.

I personally have nothing against it. I love the splashes of color that it leaves around the place. Not to say that I like all the displays I have ever seen. Because like anything they are subjective to your likes and dislikes. I love when displays are cared for after being put up and taken down before they start to look ratty. But I do find people who put up displays and leave them there to rot completely distasteful (personal opinion).

The people I know who yarn bomb tend to reuse wool, or re purpose wool they may have found in second hand shops or old jumpers. Pieces are often reused on various projects.

So what yarn bombing have you seen around? What did you like? What did you think missed the mark?
